About Voices for Yarra Ranges

A community-driven movement

About the movement

From a Desire for Real Representation to a Community Movement

Voices for Yarra Ranges began with a simple but powerful idea. People want to be heard, and they want representation that reflects their values, not just party positions.

What started as a local response to that gap has grown into a community-driven movement grounded in conversation, respect, and practical action. We are not a political party, and we are not a campaign machine. We are local residents who believe that better outcomes begin with listening.

Our approach is straightforward. We bring people together, create space for open discussion, and focus on evidence-based thinking. We ask questions, challenge assumptions, and look for solutions that reflect the real needs of our communities.

At its core, this is about rebuilding trust in how decisions are made and ensuring that everyday voices are part of that process.

A Region Defined by Community

The Yarra Ranges is not one place. It is a network of communities, each with its own identity, shaped by landscape, history, and the people who live there.

From the growing town centres of Lilydale and Mooroolbark to the hills and villages of the Dandenong Ranges, the region reflects a mix of lifestyles and perspectives. Areas such as Belgrave and Upwey carry strong creative and cultural traditions, while Healesville, Yarra Glen and the Warburton Valley are known for tourism, agriculture, and deep connections to the land.

Across the region, there is a shared appreciation for nature, local connection, and community participation. Volunteerism runs deep. People show up for each other.

That spirit is what underpins Voices for Yarra Ranges.

Part of a Growing Community Independents Movement

Across Australia, more communities are stepping forward to reshape how representation works. The Community Independents movement is built on a simple principle: local people should have a genuine say in the decisions that affect their lives.

Independent representatives are not bound by party structures. They listen directly to their communities, develop policy based on real needs, and work collaboratively across parliament. This creates space for integrity, transparency, and practical outcomes rather than rigid ideology.

Voices for Yarra Ranges aligns with this broader movement while remaining firmly grounded in local priorities. We are interested in what matters here, in this region, and how those issues can be represented effectively.

This is not about opposition for its own sake. It is about improving the quality of representation and restoring confidence in the system.

Our Priorities and Focus

Our work is shaped by the issues that consistently emerge from community conversations. These include:

  • Democracy and integrity
  • Community well-being and security
  • Climate change and protection of nature
  • Affordable housing and homelessness
  • First Peoples reconciliation
  • Opportunity for all

These are not abstract ideas. They are lived realities across the Yarra Ranges, and they guide how we listen, learn, and advocate.

Get Involved

Voices for Yarra Ranges is built on participation. The more people involved, the stronger and more representative the movement becomes.

You do not need to be a policy expert or deeply political to take part. If you care about your community, your perspective matters.

You can get involved by:

  • Joining the organisation
  • Volunteering your time or skills
  • Supporting the work through donations
  • Taking part in conversations and events

Every contribution helps build a clearer picture of what our communities need and how those needs can be represented.

This is a collective effort. A stronger, more responsive democracy starts with people choosing to engage.

A movement requires a meeting of minds and willingness from more than one individual – we’re moving!
